Hi! My name is Nora Vinh, and I am the owner of dental practice in beautiful Fountain Valley, southern California. I recently got married to my best friend this April. Welcome to my first blog entry. Thank you for sharing my journey of being a small business owner, dentist, wife, and most importantly, a daughter serving the Lord. So without further ado, here we go! I wanted to start off this blog on a great note, and what better way to do that than to tell you about pleasant surprises. We don't get very many of these, do we? So when I get to share two of them in a day with you, I hope it brings a smile to your face.
First story is of a 6 year old boy. He's a beautiful little boy, with long straight hair, side swept, and soulful, deep-blue eyes, made bigger by his sweet little wire-rimmed glasses. He's quiet. He's clearly a thinker. His parents are both in healthcare, and work with children in PICU and ICU. They tell me he's like a little old man stuck in a little boy's body. He reminds me of Macaulay Culkin in that classic movie, My Girl. This little thinker of a boy needs some work done and I am convinced he will need laughing gas - traumatizing this child is the LAST thing I want to do!
Fast-forward to this morning. Parents are convinced he won't need the laughing gas, and I am a little skeptical but I try my best. Parents like them are definitely the exception, and not the rule. They leave me with their precious boy and I get to work with him, comforting him, telling him what I will do before I do it, how it will feel, and showing him, so he isn't surprised. He takes it all in stride. Not a single tear shed. I use the classic cute kid euphemisms from pedo, such as "hot water" for the anesthetic, and "sugar bug" for the cavity, and "Mr. Thirsty Vacuum" for the suction.
He does so so well that I am elated, and we high-five each other when we're done. But here's the kicker:
Sweet boy: "You told me you were using hot water but you were actually giving me a shot." (No tone of accusation, no shock and awe)
Me: (stunned) Pause. "Well, you should've told me you knew so I wouldn't be going on and on about this BS! Did you see the NEEDLE??"
Sweet boy: (Matter-of-factly) "Yes. I already saw it when I kept my eyes open."
Oh if only all days were this pleasant and wonderful with children in the dental office!!
Pleasant surprise #2 today:
I just finished a case with a patient, let's call her Michelle (Not her real name), who has struggled with dental phobia for her whole life. Her teeth were in desperate need. After some light sedation and work done on her, almost six months later, I introduced her to her new smile. She was absolutely gorgeous. This was a case I was so worried about because of her anxiety. Turns out she and I both shed some joyful tears. She cried in gratitude first, then I did in secret. Thanking God that he gave me the grace to do his will for her and help her.
I thank God for these happy occurrences, and pray that I can always do best for my patients.
Tonight is Bible Study night with Calvary Chapel in Huntington Beach, and the dearest ladies of the study group make me feel so welcome and loved. Ever since starting the CBS (Community Bible Study), my life and those around me I feel have been changed for the better. We are studying the books of Joshua, Judges, Ruth, and Sam I and II. The book of Joshua and Judges have been so enlightening for me in terms of God's faithfulness and His desire to reach out and HELP you, not HURT you. On the bible, for me, there is no substitute for its guidance. There is no other comfort greater than the Bible. There is no parallel in its everlasting relevance. With that, I leave you with some quotes from famous thinkers in history on the Bible.
